Cozy Up To A Versatile Winter Wardrobe

These all-purpose staples keep you warm and stylish all season long.

We’ve partnered with Julia Dzafic of the fashion and design blog Lemon Stripes for styling tips and insights on some of her favorite pieces.

With winter in full swing, it can be hard to find outfit inspiration—especially when it’s cold and dark. But these five classic pieces allow you to create endless looks that keep your style perennially hot.

Great style isn’t about buying trendy new pieces every season; it’s about reworking classic, flattering items over and over again. To show you how it’s done, I styled three outfits using these wardrobe staples to show you how much diversity you can have with only a few pieces.

Read below for the items I can’t live without, and how I use them to keep things merry and bright throughout the season.

The List

1. Cable-knit Sweater

I pull out this fisherman sweater time and again. It’s classic, it’s comfortable, and it keeps me toasty on chilly New England days.

2. Classic Pair Of Jeans

You probably have one pair of jeans that makes you look and feel fabulous. Mine are a dark-wash pair of Levi’s that I’ve had forever. I love how the dark color can be dressed up or down.

3. Warm Scarf

I live in Connecticut, where winter accessories are a must—but that doesn’t mean they have to be bulky or unfashionable. I love soft, neutral scarves that don’t add extra bulk with your winter coat, that also work over a sweater for a casual weekend look.

4. Bright Top

Just because the holiday season ends come January, it doesn’t mean we have to stop being festive. I love showing up to a dinner party or meeting in a bright pop of color in the middle of winter. It adds color in a sea of gray.

5. Festive Skirt

I love this sparkly mini-skirt because of how adaptable it can be. Dress it up with a silk blouse and jewelry, or dress it down with a plaid shirt and booties.

The Looks

Outfit 1: Weekend Casual

I wanted the perfect outfit for running errands, so I paired this classic sweater with my favorite jeans for comfort, then brought in the matching purse and scarf, and tailored boots, to make the look feel pulled together.

Outfit 2: Dinner Party

The pop of color and the flutter sleeves on this shirt strike a bold chord when I walk into a room. The sparkle in the skirt combine with the statement necklace to perfectly say, “party.”

Outfit 3: Date Night

My husband and I are pretty casual, and we have the best nights out when we keep it low-key. The pink blouse adds flair to the jeans and ballet flats, while the wrap gives it all a bit of polish.
